It’s not only women that experience slowing metabolism as they get older. Men also experience this as well. Contrary to what some may think, eating more often can help you lose weight. When you eat large meals with many hours in between, your metabolism slows down between meals. Having a small meal or snack every 3 to 4 hours keeps your metabolism cranking, so you burn more calories over the course of a day.
We are going to discuss some natural ways to speed up your metabolism and get the fires burning again. Whether you want to lose weight or just maintain where you are now, you can benefit from these tips.
1. Eat More
Most believe that eating less will get you closer to that summer body. It might but at what cost? Well, if you take in too few calories, it can cause your body to lose muscle mass, which will decrease the rate of your metabolism. Plus, when you skimp on calories, your body slows the rate at which is burns calories to conserve the fuel it’s got. You have to fuel your body, keep the furnaces burning to keep your metabolism optimized. Eat 5-7 small meals a day, preferably about 3 hours apart and don’t eat closer than 2 hours before bedtime.
2. Drink Green Tea
In a recent 12-week study, participants who drank 4-5 cups of green tea daily, then did a 25-minute workout, lost an average of two more pounds and more belly fat than the non tea-drinking exercisers. Green Tea contains catechins, a type of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from fat cells and helps speed the liver’s capacity for turning fat into energy. So instead of opting for coffee in the morning, grab you a cup of green tea (hot or cold) and rev up that belly burning process!
3. HIIT workouts
What is HIIT? High-intensity interval training (HIIT), also called high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) or sprint interval training (SIT), is a form of interval training, an exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods. You have to kick up your workouts a notch, get your heart rate to a place where it is constantly in burn fat range and your body will continue to burn calories and fat even when you aren’t in the gym.
4. Put on some muscle
“Resting metabolic rate” is much higher in people with more muscle, because every pound of muscle uses about 6 calories a day just to sustain itself. If you can gain five solid pounds of muscle, your body will naturally burn the equivalent of 3 pounds of fat over the course of a year. Don’t be afraid to put on solid gains, they will help you with long term fitness and health goals.
5. Eat your protein!
Yes! Protein helps your body burn fat. We know that the more muscle you have, the more it helps your body burn fat. Hitting the gym helps you build muscle to begin with, but eating protein keeps it from breaking down and slowing your metabolic rate as a result. Protein needs differ by individual, but typically consuming 0.8 to one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day should be sufficient enough to fuel weight loss. Make sure you are eating lean proteins. Fried chicken doesn’t necessarily count as a good protein!
So, we have covered 5 simple ways to speed up your metabolism naturally. If you decide to go the supplement route, make sure you consult with your doctor before doing so.
